Gilgamesh VS “Genesis” Noah and the Flood - 1121 Words

â€Å"Religion is about turning untested belief into unshakable truth through the power of institutions and the passage of time- Richard Dawkins†. We all know the breath taking story of the Genesis flood, but have we ever noticed how similar it is to the Epic of Gilgamesh. Genesis is the story of how one God created mankind, along with everything else on Earth, and what punishments he put upon them when they acted wrong .Genesis is a chapter in the Holy Bible, which was written in the 18th century B.C. by Moses. Genesis is a Hebrew story about the creation of life and how God once destroyed it and Earth. The main characters were Adam, Eve, and the serpent. Each of them was provided a task from God, but disobeyed him and was punished forever.†¦show more content†¦Noah respected God and did every duty that was asked of him. â€Å"Noah was kindhearted and followed the rules† (Genesis 6:7). On the other hand in The Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim’s, the one Enlil called to build the arch, name means â€Å"He Who Saw Life† (The Flood of Noah). Utnapishtim was forced to carry a heavy load of guilt mainly because unlike in Genesis Noah was awarded the power to survive, and also did every task God asked of him alone. While in the Epic of Gilgamesh the gods were upset with mankind because they couldn’t get any restso they sent Utnapishtim to build an arc. He doesn’t know why Ea, another god chose him to live, but he does know that he tricked hundreds of his neighbors into laboring day and night to build the boat that would carry him and his family to safety while he abandoned them. He received a promise from the gods that from now on only individuals would be subject to death and that humankind as a whole would endure. Both stories are based on a flood and humankind being sinful, but their point views differ dramatically. God’s plan was val id and he did not regret it the action he took because he felt it was his fault and that it had to come to a stop, but the gods plan was injustice and evil. In the very prologue of the Epic of Gilgamesh, we see a reference to the number seven. Throughout Gilgamesh, as is throughout the Bible, the number seven appears continually throughout the text. The Ethics Of Ambiguity, By De Beauvoir - 1283 Words

All human beings deserve equally, the opportunity to participate in the direction of their life. This basic right is characteristic of what it means to be human. The essence of humanity is our freedom to make choices. This is more eloquently described in by De Beauvoir in her work The Ethics of Ambiguity, in which she explains that taking this right away from someone is oppressive and inhumane. One of the greatest examples of this immoral actions is the slavery that happened in the United States. This tragic historical event provides us with the illustration of what it looks like to take away someone’s basic right to choice. It is also imperative to understand that slavery, although having physically ended, effects of such still exist.†¦show more content†¦This exploitive process sets up enslaved people to become stuck in the system because they may not even realize that what is happening to them. Education also plays a part of social class, leaving a lasting impa ct on people of color. Even when enslaved people became free they were left with the stigma that was created because of their inability to gain knowledge. This situation was forced upon them by their once masters. Stigmas such as this are something that does not dissolve overnight. Freed slaves would have a hard time finding work and making their way up the system because they did not have the same opportunity to an education that their white counterparts did. On a more physical level, Douglass describes in his narratives his experience of going to another plantation which was meant to make trouble slaves more submissive to their masters. This was accomplished by forcing the slaves to work in all circumstances till the stop. Douglass then goes on to say this type of work would turn a human into a brute giving the implication that he saw this as one of the ways that enslaved people were dehumanized. Douglass saw this as dehumanization because of the harsh treatment of slaves and the disregard for their wellbeing. They were treated even worse than property because even then people had respect for their property and would not overuse it or neglect their property. This type of treatment was meantShow MoreRelatedThe Ethics of Ambiguity Essay1519 Words   |  7 PagesAmbiguity can be defined as a lack of precise meaning or interpretation, so how can we describe human existence as â€Å"ambiguous†? Surely, there must be some essence, or characteristic thing, that we can use to solidify the meaning of our existence. However, it becomes difficult to pin down exactly what every human existence has in common. ‘The Making of Modern Russia’, 1856-1964 Free Essays

a) To what extent do these sources agree that Russian government policy on agriculture consistently failed and that peasants resisted it under both Tsarist and Communist rule? Source1 concerns the emancipation statute of 1861. Western historian Ronald Hingley cites the introduction of redemption payments â€Å"serfs resented receiving too little land for their needs† this undermines the fundamental aims of the policy. Source 1 makes reference to how the Mir was in charge of paying the redemption payments for the whole village. We will write a custom essay sample on ‘The Making of Modern Russia’, 1856-1964 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Hingley points out that â€Å"individual peasants were bound in various ways to their village communes†; peasants were detained in their villages until the payments were received. Hingley notes the creation of Special Courts delegated to discipline unruly peasants â€Å"the flogging of recalcitrant peasants† this is evidence of peasant rebellion, mainly due to the fact they were in a poorer position after emancipation than they were before the policy was introduced. Source 1 suggests agricultural policies were a failure, and provoked peasant uprising, due to the hope the emancipation edict gave peasants of being free. Source 2, meanwhile, presents a mixed view on Stolypin’s agricultural reforms. Unlike Source 1 from 1992, this piece of evidence was documented circa 1906. It is therefore unaffected by later analysis or post-Communist interpretation. The first quote is from Stolypin himself, stating that the government has placed â€Å"its wager† on the â€Å"sturdy and the strong†, this indicates that past agricultural reform, such as emancipation have failed, as further â€Å"wagers† or reforms were needed. The other two quotes deal with Stolypin’s reforms more directly. The second quote is from a Tsarist Official. It provides direct evidence of rebellion by peasants towards Stolypin’s reforms â€Å"The peasants were very hostile to the Law of 9 November† rebellions were commonplace, peasants feared that if land belonged to an individual as opposed to the commune, a consequence would be some would be left with nothing. The third quote is from a peasant, it is important to not that 10% of the peasants in Russia did take up Stolypin’s proposals. Segei Semenov endorses Stolypin’s reforms anticipating a â€Å"bright new future† this challenges the notion that all agricultural policies consistently failed. Stolypin’s reforms were based on good principles that could have revitalized agriculture in Russia. This does suggest that this reform did bring some success, but the general consensus confirms that many peasants preferred social security resulting in the failure of the policy. Source 3 is an excerpt from a meeting between Churchill and Stalin during the Second World War. We se Stalin’s personal view regarding the collective farm policy, it is thus a subjective piece of evidence. Stalin implies suggests that the collective farm policy was a failure; he refers to the policy as â€Å"a terrible struggle†. Stalin insinuates peasant resistance against the policy, stating some kulaks were â€Å"wiped out by their labourers† the resistance was a product of peasant reluctance to work on collectivised farms. The farms provided little reward or incentive to the actual peasants growing the grain resulting in the dramatic deterioration of the quality and quantity of the grain. Source 3 ends with an important comment that food supply had been â€Å"vastly increased† this indicates policy victory. However modern evidence undermines Stalin’s statement, STATISTIC more and more people were dying of famine during the period of collectivization. Although, Source 3 opposes the view that agricultural policy failed, its reliability is debateable and should be questioned before it is taken into account. Source 4 is an extract from Eduard Shevardandse’s ‘The future belongs to Freedom’ Source 4 describes the Virgin Land Schemes introduced by Khrushchev/. One must note that the writer was a Communist Youth League activist, and may have been more likely to exaggerate the support the peasants actually gave to the scheme. There is no mention of opposition to the scheme, on the contrary Shevardandse describes the â€Å"trains packed with young volunteers† this stands for optimism on part of peasantry towards the scheme. Source 5 confirms the implication in Source 4 of support in some measure for the project as the scheme did successfully increase the amount of grain produced between 1958 to 1965 from 100 to 114. While the evidence in Source 4 may be true to some extent, the reliability of the source is questionable. The other factor source 4 presents is the relative success of the scheme. Source 5 does seem to disagree with the statement that the policy failed due to the increase in grain production. In Source 4 it is suggested that the policy could have been a triumph had it not been for â€Å"stupid decisions† which weighed down many successes. These â€Å"ill-conceived strategies† included lack of coherence between the crops and the terrain, and deficiency of storage place for the grain, consequently the â€Å"crops rotted in the fields†. Source 5 reinforces the feeling that the scheme was a failure, as the agricultural output during the seven year plan only increased by 14%, the target for 1965 was 170, only 114 was achieved. Source 6 also argued that Khrushchev’s policy was for the most part unsuccessful. However the failure is blamed on Khrushchev’s inheritance of â€Å"a generation of neglect†. The reliability of some sources must be taken into consideration. Some sources suggest subjectivity and bias such as Sources 3 and 4. Policies such as Stolypin’s land reforms and Khrushchev’s Virgin Land Schemes are shown to have limited success, but ultimately they both failed to reach targets required. By and large, all the sources do converge in the belief that most of the agricultural policies did fail consistently to a degree. Similarly there is evidence that it was resisted by Peasantry both under Tsarist and Communist rule. How to cite ‘The Making of Modern Russia’, 1856-1964, Papers

The Truth About Thanksgiving Essays - Plymouth, Massachusetts

The Truth About Thanksgiving The truth behind the tradition is surprising. Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims seem to go together, but the truth is, the Pilgrims never held an autumnal Thanksgiving feast. However the Pilgrims did have a feast in 1621, after their first harvest, and it is this feast, which people often refer to as The First Thanksgiving. This feast was never repeated, though, so it can't be called the beginning of a tradition, nor was it termed by the colonists or Pilgrims a Thanksgiving Feast. In fact, a day of thanksgiving was a day of prayer and fasting, and would have been held any time that they felt an extra day of thanks was called for. Nevertheless, the 1621 feast has become a model that we think of for our own Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims were not the first people to have a celebration of this kind. Many other civilizations held festivals to celebrate the harvest. The ancient Greeks and Romans prayed to the gods and goddesses of the harvest, and also originated the idea of the cornucopia--the h orn of plenty. The Jews celebrate the holiday Sukkot, which honors the awards of the harvest, and the Chinese enjoy the celebration of the Harvest Moon. Even native New Yorkers commemorate the harvest long before Thanksgiving arrives. Pumpkins, apples and corn are abundant in the open-air markets of the city beginning in late September. The autumn of 1621 yielded a plentiful harvest and the Pilgrims, gathered together with the Massasoit Indians to reap the awards of hard work. Celebrating Thanksgiving is like celebrating an even that includes the dead of over 11,000 Wampanoag Indians died due to illnesses that they contracted from white settlers. The truth of the matter is, when the Pilgrims arrived, they found an abandoned Wampanoag village and moved right in. In 1618, a massive epidemic of an unknown disease left by English explorers swept across Wampanoag country and decimated many of the villages. This epidemic caused the death of ten to thirty percent of the total population an d all but a few of the 2,000 people of the village of Patuxet. When the Pilgrims arrived in 1620, they landed at Patuxet with no idea of what had occurred. At this point, there were only about 2,000 members left in the Wampanoag tribe, down from 12,000 in 1600. Despite the incredible losses to his people, Wampanoag leader Massasoit and 90 of his men sat down for a harvest celebration offered by the white men. For three days the Wampanoag and Pilgrims feasted on deer, wild turkey, fish, beans, squash, corn and other foods native to North America. Although the celebration was good-natured, this event truly signifies the beginning of a drastic decline of native culture and Thanksgiving would be more fittingly observed as a day of mourning rather than a celebration. In the years that followed, skirmishes occurred and more Native Americans were killed. In 1637, English soldiers massacred 700 Pequot men, women and children as an example of the English way of war, yet we still celebrate Th anksgiving as a joyful event. So, as we sit down for our Thanksgiving dinner, let us consider the words of Frank James in his 1970 speech: Today is a time of celebrating for you... but it is not a time of celebrating for me. It is with a heavy heart that I look back upon what happened to my people. When the Pilgrims arrived, we, the Wampanoags, welcomed them with open arms, little knowing that it was the beginning of the end. American History

How to Overcome Writers Block (20 Tips That ACTUALLY Work)

How to Overcome Writers Block (20 Tips That ACTUALLY Work) How to Overcome Writer's Block Charles Bukowski once wrote, â€Å"Writing about a writer's block is better than not writing at all.† Some folks would rather not mention writer's block at all, as if thinking about how to overcome it will somehow exacerbate the condition - like scratching away at a rash.Unfortunately, writer’s block is a gremlin that rarely goes away by itself, at least not in a timely manner. But by arming yourself with knowledge of what causes this creative quagmire - and how to climb out of it - you’ll be much better equipped to deal with it in the future! To start, let’s answer the question...What is writer’s block?Writer’s block is the condition of being unable to proceed with writing or the inability to start writing something new. Describe some of the different ways of conducting an archaeological Research Paper

Describe some of the different ways of conducting an archaeological excavation - Research Paper Example Research indicates that the earth’s surface is completely enclosed by the soil which comes from the original bedrock. This might include chalk, sand and granite, different types of rocks or clay (Barker). Since the fundamental nature of the soil is analyzed through its underlying rocks therefore initially the subsoil is studied then soil’s fertility is known which further helps in the determination of farming or vegetation settlements. Archeological sites are broadly defined as the settled residues of different structures which over the period of time convert into earthworks and rubble through the process of stone-rubbing, erosion, decay and invasion by the animals and plants (Barker). Sometimes it is possible that the researchers locate a residual settlement which is on its way to become an archeological site. This basically facilitates scientists in studying the archeological process. The archeological sites are usually found at lowland areas (Barker). One of the important factors in locating an archeological site is the confirmation of the fact that rocks present at the upper layer of earth were formed later than those beneath them. For instance, lave forms after the development of mountainside rocks. However, surface of the earth never remains in the same pattern and hence after some time the covering of different structural settlements remove and the rock beneath them comes to the surface. The same thing happens with the archeological sites since when the superimposed layers are removed the underlying surface becomes visible which indicates the historical remains and the presence of previous living and nonliving objects (Barker). Archaeological remains are distinguished into different types. The first archeological type deals with the antiquity of man i.e. the recognition of former civilizations, for instance, those humans who lived in caves centuries ago. There are various written records which

Communications - Assignment Example 228). Friend shifts are alterations, or changes that occur when one decides to change their friends. Usually, this occurs when one of the friends, changes their perception about the friendship (Ivy, 2011, p. 216). Self-disclosure is the act of telling your friend about yourself, your hidden secrets that define your personality (Ivy, 2011, p. 199). Friendship intimacy is the close relation that two friends share in a friendship (Ivy, 2011, p.220). Jocular sparring refers to unique way that men between themselves and it usually go wrong when used with women (Ivy, 2011, p. 230). Male-male friendships and female-female friendships differ in the content of their conversation. Female friends talk more often and their conversations main topics center on intimate topics, sex differences, personal and family matters. Men friends always talk less than their female counterparts where their conversations center on sports. The principal dissimilarity between the two types of friendships is based on the sex-stereotypical assumptions, which tend to favor men and not women. Female-female friendships are always intimate unlike male-male friendships. This implies that female friends disclose their intimate selves. This creates more liking and a cohesive bond between them (Ivy, 2011, p. 220). Male friends rarely disclose their intimate self and friendships are not that intimate and therefore do not develop strong bonds (Ivy, 2011, p. 220-221). Female-female friendships are characterized by voluntary relations between the friends. Another major characteristic is the emphasis on conversational and emotional expressiveness. These friendships are also characterized by talks of family and personal matters (Ivy, 2011, p.

Research methods and study skills Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Research methods and study skills - Coursework Example The study relates the area of urbanisation with social relations at community level by focusing on social indicators associated with housing. The analysis dwelt in the pace of historical development in measuring the diversity house age in predicting the measurement of the relations associated with neighbourly social based on multilevel framework. The researcher used neighbourhood built and individual’s socio-demographic data as the controls to validate the finding (king, 2013). The meta-analysis study by Ewing and Cervero (2010) is built on the realisation that built environment and the use of automobiles are associated in many ways. For instance, the problems associated with climate change, dependence on oil, congestion within the cities, and sprawl associates with the urban designs and the planning, which prompts the locations and the states to use the concepts of built environment to bring sanity to the automobile use. The building of roads has not been in tandem with the demand of the travel. To achieve the objective of the study, the researchers determined the elasticity by computing the values for the individual studies selected and later pooled to generate the weighted average. The study found that variables associated to travel were inelastic when assessed from the built environment perspective (Ewing and Cervero, 2010). The method adopted by King to acquire the data for the study was survey. The source of the data was the Chicago community adult-health studies. The data obtained for this study involved respondents characteristics of the neighbourhood in relation to their physical and social status, the psychosocial and socioeconomic status. The most important factor that was put into consideration is the fact that the Chicago community adult health data has a clustered sampling framework. The framework is essential for facilitating the human development project in the entire Chicago neighbourhood. This means that getting the respondents

Examining The Work Of Gwen Harwood English Literature Essay

Examining The Work Of Gwen Harwood English Literature Essay Harwoods work has always maintained universal appeal in its ability to articulate the indescribable in her dealing with themes that are intrinsically relevant to human experiences. As Strauss describes, Harwood effectively plays with dualistic boundaries, whether they be boundaries between life and death, present and past as a means to articulate her ruminations and this is reflective in many of her poems. Father and Child delves into the loss of childhood innocence and consequential lessons on life and death following her confronting encounter. In Barn Owl, the persona comes to learn after firing the first shot of her fathers gun that death is an obscene buddle of stuff that dropped, and dribbled through loose straw tangling in bowels. The violent, graphic imagery evoke feelings of repugnance which highlights the grotesque nature of death, being that of prolonged pain and anguish. Thus the child articulates a deepened understanding of the vulnerability of life, the finality of death, and the sorrow in taking away a life. This horrific perception is contrasted to Nightfall which portrays death as a natural, inevitable outcome that can be peaceful. This diptych structure provides didactic lessons as noted by Hoddinott who praises Harwoods ability to interweave past and present as one of her most striking gifts. In Nightfall, the poet is no longer a child, but has matured and engendered an acceptance of death as part of the cycle of life through the Christian allusion to heaven times promised land. The metaphor since there is no more to taste, ripeness is plainly all, father we pick our last fruits of the temporal recounts the fathers fufilled life and shows that the power of death is superseded by the eternal nature of their memories. The intertextual allusion to King Lear Old King, your marvellous journeys done heightens the responders awareness of the personas increasing self-knowledge about death, the complexities of life and the subleties of her relationship with her father, seen in the juxtaposition of Old King with old No-Sayer. Although Harwood acknowledges the lasting losses of death and the sorrow of change, she also recognizes that in spite of all of this, things truly named can never vanish from earth. She articulates that memories will surpass the grief and suffering of the fathers death as the persona learns to accept the uncertainty of life. Harwood extends on this exploration of death as an obscene experience, by exploring how death is abstract and undesirable yet inevitable in The Sharpness of Death. The repetition of obscene gives her poems coherance as a body of work in her investigation of death. She continues by exploring the intellectual aspects of death as she makes references to philosophers suc h as Heidegger to dismiss their theories on life and death as overly intricate and meaningless. This is reinforced through her exclamatory repetition of untranslatable as ever! accompanied by a scornful tone which underlines her disdain and frustration over the flaws in their rational philosophical musings over such mystique experience. Additionally, Harwood articulates the transience of life in the final two lines of Nasturtiums, illustrating the continual cycle of time as the light is gone but still held within the seeds of seeds. This is an image of continual rebirth of innocence and creativity as life moves on and it is this calm even tone that reflects Harwoods understanding of lifes changes and eventual end. Her acceptance is reflective in her final bargain, demonstrated thro ugh her defiant, imperative tone and direct address; Death I will tell you nowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦if I fall from that time, then set your teeth in me. Here, the fierce personification of death shown through its capitalisation accentuates its prevailing power and inexorability. By doing so, she justifies that passionate experiences and fulfilling relationships are fundamental because of deaths inevitable arrival. The unity of the poemy is seen in the cyclic structure as the final part closes the opening deal. As a result, we come to agree with Strauss in descirbing Harwood as a new and distinctive voice as the Sharpness of Death effectively delves into the complexities of death in taking us through fearing death to accepting it as both mysterious and inevitable. Accordingly, we acknowledge that it is through a personal joyous affirmation of life that death is defeated. Likewise At Mornington also explores the universality of human experience through observations of the ephemeral passing of time and the temporal nature of human existence. Transpiring is the heightened awareness of the value of shared and meaningful human experiences and a firm acceptance of the certainty of mortality. An extended metaphor amplifies this notion that life is full of opportunity for joy and reinvention, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦we have one day only one/but more than enough to refresh us. Like the personas realisation in Nightfall that memories trascend ones death, the recollections of this poem underline that all of life amounts to, dreams, pain, memories, love and grief and thus lifes transience is supported through expressions of love and friendship. Harwood refers to the pumpkin vine as a parable of herself; the lesson intrinsic in each of her musings is that although death is inevitable and permanent, there is some consolation in a life of virtue and fulfilment. The poems sense of unity is reflected in its cyclical nature, beginning and ending with the motif of water, symbolic of the flow of water and memory, in addition to the recurring rolli ng motion. Her first reference in the simile rolled like a doll portrays her childhood innocence in her perception of invincibility, believing that she could walk on water. Towards the conclusion, the water becomes a metaphor for death when I am seized at last and rolled in one grinding race suggesting her acknowledgement of deaths power and her own mortality. The reflective, reverent tone indicates her acceptance of death, captured in the simile, like light on the face of waters that bear me away forever, depicting death as peaceful and serene. As Hoddinott comments, this poem eloquently traces the losses occasioned by time against the power of memory to keep alive the illumination of moments that renew the world. Accordingly, as responders we also come to accept the inexorableness of death and appreciate the importance of memory to retain lifes richness. Harwoods exploration on the significant ideas of death is evident throughout many of her works and it is through her investigation on this universally complex human experience, does she generate worldwide appeal.

Nurture and Nature - Influence of Parents on Childrens Sexual Orientat

Influence of Parents on Children's Sexual Orientation      Ã‚  Ã‚   Do parents influence their children's sexuality?   The answer may surprise you: no they do not.   It has been found that about 90% of sons of gay fathers are heterosexual (Bailey 124).   It was also found that 90% of daughters of lesbian women are also heterosexual (Golombok 4).   According to a poll taken by Northwestern University almost 95% of people expect children of homosexual parents to be homosexual themselves (Bailey 125).   This popular belief has affected many child custody decisions because of the possibility of the parents molesting the children, or the possibility of the children becoming homosexual themselves.   Even if the children becoming homosexual is a possibility, why deny custody to a parent based on his or her sexuality?      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The question has been raised on what can and what can't make a child homosexual.   Some believe that children learn by imitating their parents.   This theory cannot be totally rejected, but due to recent research it is believed to be more unlikely.   Others have said that children identify with an opposite-sex parent and copying their behavior, this coupled with a distant same-sex parent makes the argument even more believable.   It is also possible that homosexual parents reinforce certain types of behavior, either homo- or heterosexual (Bailey 125-126).      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Some say that hormones affect the sexuality of children, which may be inherited from the parents.   For example, an anatomical difference in the hypothalamus of homosexual men has recently been identified, but the reason for this difference is still unknown (Golombok 4).   Sex hormones are seen by some... ... Whether it be hormones or genes inherited from the parents, or the environment a child is brought up in, researchers still need to complete their studies on the issue to find out the truth behind the matter.    Bibliography    Bailey, J. Polythene: Plastic Shopping Bags

Polythene pollution is everywhere, and the problem is getting worse. For most of us, the problem is seen as one of visual pollution, where plastic bags litter streets, roadways, and in some cases scenic areas across the country. No one will argue that polythene is useful. The plastic bags we use to carry home food or products are for the most part very light and very strong. Using these bags is not really the problem. The problem, leading to polythene pollution, is the improper methods of disposing of the bags. They've been marketed as throw-away items, and that is all too often what we do, except they don’t always end up in the garbage. Save A Tree – Polythene wasn't introduced as a bad thing. It wasn't all that many years ago that we started using plastic bags to â€Å"save a tree†. About 25 children in the United States suffocate each year due to plastic bags, 99.2% are under the age of one. This has led to voluntary warning labels on some bags which may pose a hazard to small children.Danger to marine wildlifePlastic bags, which escape the garbage collection process, often end up in streams, which then lead them to end up in the open ocean. Because they float, and resemble a jellyfish, plastic bags pose significant dangers to marine mammals, such as Leatherback sea turtles, when they enter their digestive tract. Because plastic bags cause damage to ocean marine life, litter city streets, and cont ribute to carbon emissions in their manufacture and shipping, some towns in the United States, including San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, Seattle, WA and Austin, TX have begun to ban or restrict the use of plastic bags, usually starting with plastic shopping bags. The Supreme Court And Government By The People Essays - Free Essays

The Supreme Court And Government By The People Essays - Free Essays The Supreme Court And Government By The People Jason I. Explain the distinction between substance and process and the importance of the distinction for the issues discussed in this course. Over the past few yearsthe courtholding that henceforth, before it can be determined that you Are entitled to due process at all, and thus necessarily before it can be decided what process is due, you must show that what you have been deprived of amounts to a liberty interest or perhaps a property interest. (Ely, p.19) Just as a skilled magician will deliberately show his empty top hat to the audience right before he pulls a rabbit out by its ears, so was judicial review pulled out of thin air. Judicial review has opened the floodgates of substantive procedures in the courts, which refer to content based decisions made by judges, as a tool employed in matters of judicial review and has become the dominant means of legislating in areas which would not otherwise be open to legal re-interpretation. In essence substance refers to the ability and right of judges to employ their own values in rendering decisions concerning a case at hand or in the past, reflecting a non-interpretivist approach to legislating. Such decisions are grounded in the Substantive Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment (a doctrine created by Justice Taney in the Dred Scott case itself derived from the Fifth amendment), which ostensibly provides citizens protection from the state governments. Substance also refers to moral ity and decisions based on natural law as opposed to positivism. Process is at the heart of democracy because it reflects the legitimate method by which a community can enact laws in a system of representative democracy; to that end, the principal virtue of a process oriented political system is its independence of concurrent political, moral, or societal pressures. These issues are obviously paramount in studying social reform and the role of the courts (judges) as legislators or guardians of correct legislative practice. #2 Explain Elys account of prejudice and the role it plays in his theory of judicial review. So stereotypes, at least in the ordinary sense of that term, are the inevitable stuff of legislation.(Ely, p.156) Ely describes prejudice as a lens distorting reality, that blinds us to overlapping interests which in fact exist. In reference to the treatment of minorities and blacks in particular, prejudice in the legislative levels of government is the basis of laws which put a minority group without adequate, if any representation or voice at a disadvantage without reference to some worthy social goal and at the judicial level implies a consensus of solicitude among the judiciary toward such discrete and insular groups within society. The other type of prejudice involves suspicious classifications, or stereotypes that may disadvantage groups but still is within the boundaries of democracy; this type of classification is considered harmful by Ely when we consider the presence of undue stereotypes that are discovered in previous acts of legislation. Ely asserts a more interperetivist approach although he concedes the practical implausibility of such an approach because of the inability of the co nstitution to forsee all possible situations. In the final analysis, Ely thinks in a representative democracy laws should agree with those values which are fundamental in the constitution (and surrounding historical documents) and which obligates, without undue discrimination obligates all to obey, despite a plurality of perspectives. Finally, Ely offers up that because matters of racial, sexual, moral and other prejudices are essentially primae facia in terms of what constitutes discrimination, a process-based model for the Supreme Court would be optimal, the only difficult being hard cases. #3 Explain Dworkins critique of Elys theory. In qny case, judicial review of the political processes only polices democracy; it does not seek to override it as judicial review of substance doesMy point in this essay is that both ways end in failure, and in the same sort of failure. (Dworkin, p.34) Dworkin called Elys Democracy and Distrust interesting and he obviously saw some merit in Elys claims; however, Dworkin analyzed Elys four main assertions and accepted only the first (that judicial review should be concerned with process legislation rather than the substantive decisions made by judges). Dworkin disagreed with Ely on his second point,

Blue-sky still appeals - Emphasis

Blue-sky still appeals Blue-sky still appeals Corporate jargon and management buzzwords are persistent pests. We train around two thousand people a year in business-writing skills. But weve yet to meet anyone who likes phrases like paradigm shift or blue-sky thinking. Raising the bar and low hanging fruit sound more like some kind of tropical limbo challenge than anything to do with the business world. And still the corporate world continues to embrace such phrases. Nor is the public sector immune: phrases such as step change and going forward seem as common there as in the commercial world (if not more so). Maybe its a confidence issue. These impressively meaningless words and phrases give people and organisations a misplaced sense of professionalism or belonging. Organisations even adopt their own personalised brand of corporate jargon as some kind of employee bonding tool. Unfortunately, it often has the opposite effect when people start to use the jargon to get one over on their bemused colleagues, who lack the courage to ask what these phrases actually mean. Management consultants may be partly to blame too, especially where they influence language at board level, which then trickles down to managers. One civil service manager we spoke to said that its almost a hopeless case in some instances: he couldnt see his department ever letting go of stakeholder, for example, even though he believed people used such jargon as a substitute for thinking. But there is a growing contempt for this kind of language, underlined by a strong suspicion that it is often used to mask inexperience and a lack of expertise. So well continue to campaign for people to turn their backs on corporate buzzwords and replace them with clear, direct and concise language that actually means something.

Asthma worse in schoolchildren Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Asthma worse in schoolchildren - Research Paper Example A survey of schoolchildren in Taiwan had revealed that owing to fungal spores in classrooms, the rate of the disease has increased from 6 percent to 11 percent. Hence it is understood that schoolchildren are faced with significant environmental challenges that impact their health and cause asthma to deteriorate (Asthma worse in schoolchildren with more fungal spores in the classroom, 2014). In general, buildings that are not maintained properly and lack proper systems of ventilation tend to allow mold to thrive in. as a result the quality of indoor air within the buildings get affected severely. Spores of mold are known to drift down through classrooms, if school buildings are considered from tiles of the ceilings. Consequently, health hazards for schoolchildren arise, of which the impacts of asthma are significantly concerning as the condition gets worsened owing to such fungal spores (Dykiel, Hobbs and Roberson, 2009, p.140). There are certain schools that have evaluation systems for their various facilities. From such evaluations, it has been obtained that shortcomings in the facilities of a school buildings result in problems related to mold and their spores. This can be associated with larger problems associated with the buildings such as poor oversight in relation to the construction of the buildings, lack of planning for handling situations of crisis, and so on (Dykiel, Hobbs and Roberson, 2009, p.140). The presence of fungi is possible anywhere if oxygen and moisture are available. In buildings, the growth of the fungi increases when excessive accumulation of moisture occurs in the buildings, and the problem persists or increases if the issue remains unattended. Different studies have similar views that reflect on the fact that airborne fungal spores act as allergens causing severe impacts of asthma. However some studies are not sure of the

New Business Venture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words

New Business Venture - Essay Example New Business Venture New product development therefore is one of the areas where the entrepreneurs actually have to look into the possibility of the looking into the analysis and identification of the social trends. Social trends provide a critical insight into the way the consumers in the given market. Some of the social trends which need to be explored in order to assess the probability of success for the introduction of the new products include different factors. In this given situation since the business is related with the food therefore they can different and variable factors affecting the choices of the Adam in terms of offering new products on the new menu. Since Adam is offering a menu which already offers products which are diverse, there can be different social trends which need to be explored in further details in order to successfully introduce new items on the menu, Some of the important social trends which can be added to the list in order to add items on the menu may be include: Demograph ics Understanding the demographic trends is one of the key elements in the launching of new products and services. Demographics include factors such as age, the distribution of different genders in the society, the overall population etc. For example, if the population is relatively young, it may be possible that they will be preferring more fast food rather than eating the traditional foods and if the overall ratio of population is aged, it may be quite possible that they will prefer to eat foods which are healthy and correspond to their life style. The overall growth rates in the population are also an important element to be explored in order to ensure that there will be sufficient demand for the product in the future. (Mellor, 2008). Culture Culture is an important element to be explored because it significantly influence the way people behave, act and relate themselves to certain trends in the society. Culture also outlines the overall orientation of the society towards eating out and overall attitude towards food. If it’s a culture in the society that most families tend to eat in-house, it may not be possible for the businesses to actually successfully launch new products.( Wang, 2009). It is also important to understand that the culture can play critical role in outlining the overall features of the product also. Since the existing menu suggest that Adam has taken care of the different cultural needs of the customers by offering Indian, Thai as well as other food, it is therefore important that Adam must take into consideration the overall influence of culture on the introduction of new product on the menu. Life Style Understanding life style is also another important factor which needs to be explored in order to understand as to what life style the consumers subscribe to. The lifestyle can include different factors such as family’s income and how they spend it, whether the family prefers to spend outside and in eating out as well as who m akes the spending decisions in the family. It is also important to note that the lifestyle also allow the entrepreneurs to further get an insight into how the overall changes in the lifestyle will actually affect the decision making process of the family as a whole. Health Consciousness Health consciousness can be another important social trend which Adam may need to consider in order

I'm not sure Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

I'm not sure - Essay Example He explained Laozi’s thoughts through concrete instances from history, people’s life, and also from his surroundings. But most often, Zhuangzi’s elucidations appear most complex and complicated. Sometimes, they become diverted the mainstream of Daoism and tend to appear as an individual philosophic strand. The most remarkable difference between the two is how they view ‘Tao’ or the Way. Both of them believe that the Way is beyond human perception and conception. In this regard, both of them are realists. But Zhuangzi’s approach to Tao or the Way is more applicable to human life than Laozi’s. That is, Laozi is more metaphysical than Zhuangzi. Since Laozi’s philosophy fails to dispel the transcendence of the Way or Tao, his teachings do not care much about human life as Zhuangzi’s teachings do. In this regard, it can be said that Zhuangzi’s ‘Daoism’ is superior to Laozi’s. Both Laozi and Zhuangzi acknowledge the ‘Dao’ as a transcendental existence which contains the whole universe. In Laozi’s word, â€Å"The Great Tao flows everywhere../All things depend on it for life,/and it does not turn away from them./ One may think of it as the mother of all beneath Heaven./ We do not know its name, but we call it Tao ...† (Ivanhoe & Norden 165). It is nameless and formless and it exists everywhere. Yet nothing in this universe can be construed as the ‘Dao’. It is eternal and it is not knowledgeable. Rather it is beyond human perception as well as human language. The problem of human language is that it is not sufficient enough to describe it. It exists, but it cannot be described, as Laozi says, â€Å"The Tao that can be told of is not the eternal Tao;/ the name that can be named is not the eternal name† (Ivanhoe & Norden 165). Laozi further describes it, â€Å"There is a thing, formless yet complete./ Before heav en and earth it existed. /Without sound, without

The Adoption of Electrically Powered Vehicles Essay Example for Free

The Adoption of Electrically Powered Vehicles Essay The non-internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles consists of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), single-fuel all electric vehicles (EV), and fuel cell vehicles (FCV). Earlier attempts at non-ICE vehicles were faced with many challenges resulting in abandonment of research and development. General Motors (GM) discontinued the EV1 electric vehicle after investing about $1 billion in the development. The Toyota RAV 4-EV, which was popular among environmentalist, was discontinued based on sales not high enough to justify production costs. The attention that non-ICE vehicles are receiving is driven by environmental concerns, scarcity of fossil fuel, high gasoline prices and others. The environmental concerns stems from the pollution from carbon dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels. In 2009, the United States used 19. 6% of the world primary energy consumption and 17. 7% of world carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption ranking first and second respectively. There is a correlation between the carbon dioxide concentration and the earth’s surface temperature. There is a general increase in global temperature with increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide. The high initial cost of the non-ICE vehicles as compared to ICE versions is also an issue. The cost differential is mainly due to the technology, with battery being a major cost driver. For example, in 2009 the cost of Toyota Camry HEV was $26,160 whiles the cost of a comparable ICE version was $20,445. The price of gasoline in the U. S. is relatively cheap, thus affecting the adoption of the non-ICE vehicles. In 2008, the average retail price of gasoline in the U. S. was $3. 25 per gallon, with 14% as tax component. In the same year, the average price of gasoline in the UK, Germany, and France were $7. 53, $7. 72, and $7. 53 with tax components of 161%, 170%, and 154% respectively. The movement from ICE powered vehicles to the non-ICE powered vehicles was due to signs of oil shortages and air quality concerns. The government responded with the Clean Air Act in 1970 requiring cars to have catalytic converters to reduce pollutants. Other government intervention placing restriction on vehicle emission standards forced the industry to launch research and development projects in battery powered electric vehicles. There are four major non- ICE design concepts, which are as follows: ? ? ? ? HEV, the use of on board electricity and gasoline to move the vehicle PHEV, the use of on board electricity and gasoline to move the vehicle and also ability to plug into an external power outlet to recharge the battery. EV, the use of only electricity to move the vehicle and also ability to plug into an external power outlet to recharge the battery. FCV, the use stacks of electrodes and electrolytes that generates electricity to move vehicle Page 1 of 2 The non-ICE vehicle market has gone through rough times in shaping the current, HEV, PHEV, EV, and FCVs. The HEV, PHEV, and EV are different products but share some commonality by way of infrastructural needs. However, FCVs appear to have a lower rate for adoption due to cost involved in providing the necessary infrastructure. The approximate cost of providing installed fuel station for the FCV is $50,000. The comparable cost for the electric plug-in station is $3,000 to $6,000. Automobile companies need to continue investing in research and development in the non-ICE vehicles. It is their interest to improve fuel efficiency well above the standards set by government imposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. A particular attention to improving the range of the vehicle is required. The range of the vehicle is the distance of travel per charge and or full tank of gas. The miles per gallon (MPG) is another attribute which is interrelated to the range. The sales figures provided shows that in November 2009, Toyota Prius had 49. 7% of the total 19,334 HEVs sold in the US. Toyota Prius also happen to be the HEV with the highest miles per gallon (MPG) rating at 50. This clearly indicates that the mileage rating is an important attribute of the HEV. Consider reducing the cost premium on the vehicles and articulating the long-term savings in non-ICE vehicle ownership. The survey response regarding the likelihood of buying a PHEV with fuel savings of 75% shows a steep decline in chances of buying with increasing cost premium. Develop vehicle for specific driving need by providing different cost options, guided by customer segmentation by driving mission. The high cost of the initial purchase will be addressed by focusing on providing options due to driving needs of the customer. This can be addressed by having different range points which will typically imply reducing the battery packs in the vehicle. Therefore, the price per vehicle can be reduced per specific need. The FCV appears to have a very low possibility of success, hence its research and investment funds will be reallocated. Partner with government, competitors, and other stakeholders to develop the infrastructure to support main stream adoption. The major cost driver to the non-ICE vehicles is the battery. Therefore by scaling down the cost by driving needs, a prospect with a shorter commute distance can opt for a less costly version of a model with just the right mix. With 2. 28 vehicles per household in the US, it expected that household will consider having a non-ICE vehicle in the mix for shorter commute and errands. To discontinue non-promising project will free up human resource and money to be used to improve other investments. The freed up resource will support an increase in marketing related plan and implementation. Together with other government and other stakeholders, incentives will be sought to encourage non-ICE adoption by citing environmental challenges to the country in specific and the earth in general. These strategies overall will improve early the adoption of Electrically Powered Vehicles in the U. S.

The Next Generation Of Recycling Bins English Language Essay

The Next Generation Of Recycling Bins English Language Essay For many years people have practiced recycling. In old times, where resources were less abundant than today, people would be more conscious about reducing, reusing and recycling. On the other hand, people nowadays dont even bother to stop and think about what is going to happen once all raw materials on Earth are gone. They dont realize that once it is all used up, there will be no way to get some more anywhere else. What happens when people dont recycle is that all the recyclable products that are thrown away go straight into landfills altogether with other waste, and then it is all eventually lost. There is, however, a small part of the population who does contribute to the recycling process, but it is just a minority, the other part of the population either doesnt realize the significance of recycling or they just dont care. This small minority that helps recycling things includes some companies and important people. They have been trying to get more and more people involved in the recycling process. Even channels for children have created projects to motivate kids and teach them about the significance of recycling. For example, Disney Channel has its own project called Friends For Change, where they have the main goal of teaching kids how to help and care about the planet. That is very important because kids will grow up to be more conscious about the environment. On the other hand, older people are more complicated to convince or persuade that recycling is very important. Simple things have been created in order to help people recycle and motivate them to do it in their own houses, so they dont even have to go anywhere else to recycle because these recycling containers can be place in their kitchen or anywhere they want. There are many different designs with lots of different features. These bins have diverse purposes depending on what people are looking for. There are certain containers that include two compartments, one for recyclable products and the other one for other wastes. Other bins contain different compartments labeled so that each recyclable material can be placed on separate places. Some have pedals, so people dont have to use their hands to open up the trashcan; others have sensors so that the lid opens up automatically. Even though the containers sound like a great deal, it might not be that good of a deal because people have been complaining about the containers being too small, or too expensive, or too fragile and easily broken. A solution to this problem is to design and create a new improved container that will be made of stainless steel to make it more resistant and durable, that will contain larger compartments to place the trash or recyclable items, that will include an infrared sensor lid opener, and that will have a longer warranty period. Today in the United States, Americans use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans every year. At one time, aluminum was more expensive than gold. Thats not even including the 50 billion disposable plastic water bottles Americans use a year. That makes up almost 20% of the composition in an average dump. Bottles and cans are some of the easiest items to recycle but yet Americans still have trouble recycling them. Call it laziness or ignorance about the subject, but there should be more efficient advances to allow recycling bottles and cans easier for Americans. Most raw materials are resources that cannot be created or formed by human beings. That means the amount of these raw materials that exist in the planet are limited, and once they are used up completely by people, there is no way to produce more. This is why it is so important to think wisely when it comes to recycling or just throwing away valuable materials into the trash. For many years, it has been difficult to educate peopl e the significance of recycling, and these attempts have been unsuccessful because only a minority of the population has been contributing to the recycling process. The lack of care for the environment is just going to turn the world into a huge landfill. America has always been the place where everyone wants to come and live, but with statistics such as these soon there wont be anything but landfills. With that said, saving the environment should be a very important objective for Americans. Technology today is extremely advanced, yet there isnt any technological advance to sort out bottles and cans more efficiently. The recycling process in America today offers each household a pair of recycling bins to recycle plastics/glass bottles, empty soda cans, and other containers that are later recycled after a long process of separating wastes according to their composition. Every week, workers pick up these bins and take them back to the facility to sort the items in the bins, but the bottles and cans that are thrown in the trash by people, do not get recycled. These recyclable items make it to the landfills and take up valuable space that could be used for other waste. Most public places such as schools and shopping malls today have designated trash bins for glass/plastic bottles and aluminum cans, which really help the process of recycling. Yet people still dont always place those recyclable bottles and cans into those bins and they dont get recycled. In order to help the consumers recycle more efficiently, different types of containers for recyclable items have been developed. These developments make recycling much more convenient and assessable for the consumer. The consumers dont even have to leave their homes in order to recycle; it is just a matter of buying one of those containers. The problem is that some are expensive, some are very fragile and therefore easily broken, and some are just too small. More people in the world would recycle if only these recycling containers were built more for the consumers everyday use. Recycling is already a difficult task for many, so when a company produces a recycling device, it absolutely has to be exceptional. If not it would definitely discourage people from recycling. A simple example is the Neu Home 16-Gallon 2-Section Recycle Bin, which is a two-compartment recycle bin that holds 16 gallons/60 liters (8 gallons per compartment). It is made of stainless steel with plastic pullout buckets. It has a 30-day warranty and it is sold for $96.54. According to customer reviews, it is too expensive and not resistant at all, it is easily dented, and it is too small. The Plastic/Aluminum Recycling Center is another example. This container has superior quality, it is durable and it has unique disposal openings with recycle symbols and product labeling for clearly identification. It separates and stores recycling/trash material for easy removal and lower maintenance. It has a 55-gallon capacity (each compartment has a 27.5-gallon liner). It is sold for $240 plus $95 for shipping. Even though it is a good container and it seems resistant, the price is too high; therefore, people wont buy something that expensive. There are no reviews available for that contain er. Another example and one of the more advanced bins that there is for sale is the iTouchless 16 Gallon Recycling Containers with Infrared-Sensor Lid Openers, which holds 16 gallons/60 liters total and comes with two 8-gallon inner plastic buckets, one for trash and the other one for recycle. It works using the latest sensor technology, lid opens automatically and it remains open when your hands are 6 from the sensor. It brings open/close buttons for manual operation. It runs on 4 D-size batteries or optional AC-power adaptor. It has a 1-year manufacturers warranty and it is sold for $89.98. According to customer reviews, it is too fragile and easily broken because the lid is made of plastic, and the containers are small. In order to solve the problem of recycling and the containers, all of those models mentioned above should be improved by developing a new container that contains some of the pros of those already existing containers, and of course getting rid of the cons. First of all, the container cannot be made of plastic because it will be too fragile and it would probably break. It will have to be made of stainless steel bolts and hinges to make sure it is more resistant. The design can still have two buckets to store recyclable items, but instead of being capable of holding only 8 gallons per compartment, it will be made bigger so that it can hold at least 12 gallons per bucket (it cannot be made too big either because then it wont be feasible). The pedal mechanism can be removed because it can be easily damage or broken, so instead, the infrared-sensor will be kept so that it can open automatically. Each compartment will be properly labeled in order to identify where the trash and where the re cyclable items have to be placed. The device will work using the 4 D-size batteries or the optional AC-power adaptor. The container will have to include at least a 1-year warranty and an optional extended warranty. Ultimately our goal is to encourage recycling by developing this new and improved recycling container. By improving these recycling containers and developing one that is more efficient, people will be more motivated to purchase this type of recycling bins to recycle in their own homes. When people read bad reviews about products, they are less likely to buy it than when they read good comments about the product. Its just natural to not want to purchase a product that other consumers have negative encounters with. If the product is developed well, consumers get motivated in purchasing the improved container and in turn will start recycling more and fewer materials would be wasted. This would also reduced the size of the landfills and ultimately keep America a cleaner place. As a result, the benefits would not be only for people, but also for our environment because it would make the recycling process more effective. Feasibility Our idea to make a more productive and efficient recycling bin will be a feasible idea once we explain our reasoning in the following paragraph. For the already existing products we have described earlier in this essay, we will take the pros from those and what consumers have reviewed as best qualities about those recycling bins, and we will make something that is efficient in many areas that existing products lack. One of the problems with already existing models is the size and weight of the recycling bin. Our newly designed model will be made with high quality stainless steel, in a 12-gallon container, which will hold two compartments. The dimensions of this product will be approximately 36x 34.5 x 21.75 and it will weigh around 24 lbs; which will make it easier to handle. As for materials, most of the bin will be made from stainless steel as mentioned before and other features will include infrared-sensor. No plastic will be used because it has already been known to be too fragile and consumers were not happy with it. The cost of our product will be competitive with existing models. The cost of manufacturing the bin will be $92.50 and it will be sold on the market for $100.90. As for the installation of the product, the recycling bin will come already built in the box and all that will be needed to do is unwrap the packaging, install batteries or connect to AC power, and place in desired location for best accessibility. For best customer satisfaction, we have also decided to include one-year product warranty, therefore if there are any malfunctions the product will be fixed at no charge or replaced fully if needed. In addition, we will require consumers to take necessary measures to keep the recycle bin clean, especially around the infrared sensor area so it continues to work properly for years to come. It will also guarantee that if product is bought with battery power that it does not waste battery energy and will continue to work with one set of battery for at least one year, this in the long run will save the consumer expenses. This modern and advanced recycle bin will be best suited for an everyday household, where parents can also encourage and teach kids the importance of recycling. Given that the bin is sensory powered it will be easier for younger kids and for the elderly to operate the product since no foot-pedal mechanism is required, and will have a tightly shut lid that releases no odor and will work very silently to not be distracting. Conclusion Recycling saves the planet in many ways, for example, it reduces the amount of waste that is placed in the landfills, and therefore it lowers the pollution that those landfills create. Also, it reduces the amount of energy that it is used because it takes more energy to process new materials than already used materials. This is why recycling is so important and it is necessary that people start being conscious about our environment. They have to get used to the fact that everybody must start recycling if they want to conserve the planet. Thats why devices such as recycle/trash containers have been created, so that people can have the commodity of recycling in their own houses. As it was already mentioned, this containers need to be improved in order to satisfy peoples needs and that way more people will be motivated to buy this type of product for their homes. They need to be made resistant, durable, bigger, and they need to keep the advanced features as the infrared sensors so that it will automatically open. Future improvements with more technological advances could also be made to improve the recycling container. Even new types of containers can be developed. For example, in the future, it might be possible to develop a container that is able to automatically separate plastics from metals. It could have a metal detector so when it detects metal it places cans to one side and then when it doesnt detect metals, it can place plastics to the other side. Of course, it would only work by placing one item at a time. Another future improvement would be a container that is able to recognize recyclable from non-recyclable items, so that it would place regular trash in one side and recyclable products in another side. That would be even more complicated and it might not be feasible, but it would definitely help the recycling process because people wouldnt even have to place stuff in different compartments, just one compartment and the container would do the job of sorting the items out. People have already being working on designing new prototypes that are much more advanced and that have been made using the latest technology. Obviously, these devices are not for sale because they would be extremely expensive, so they are just prototypes for now. An example of one of these sophisticated devices is the Barcode Recycle Station, in which there are four bins, one for each type of recyclable material. When you scan an unknown item, the appropriate container will open up automatically. This prototype is an illustration that clearly shows that it is possible to make big improvements using the more advanced technology in order to develop better containers to help and motivate people to recycle. With new technological advances every day, it is likely that someday more efficient and affordable recyclable containers will be developed, allowing the standard recycling bins of today to be revolutionized to be capable of separating bottles from cans and recyclable products from tr ash that are being thrown into a bin. The use of stainless steel bolts and hinges instead of plastic, a larger compartment to store items, and a longer warranty for the recycling container would improve Americans mentality on recycling. These simple improvements to the trash bin would make America a much more efficient and environmentally friendly place to live.
